Price Nissan two new models are cheaper

Both new Nissan models are cheaper

The Indian compact car market is already crowded with many cars struggling to survive. Maruti Suzuki has dominated this segment for decades. However, many car companies see more growth potential in this segment and therefore plan to produce more small cars in this segment in the coming years. Nissan Motor India is one of them. According to AutocarIndia, after the success of the Nissan Micra in India, the company plans to add two new small cars to its product portfolio over the next 3 years to meet the growing demand for small cars in India.

The first model (code: K2) will be based on the old two-generation Micra platform (code: K11), but will get either a new bonnet or an all-new body and interior. Launched in December 2012, the K2 Wagon R and A-star will be sold at a competitive price of around 3.5 lakhs. Engine options are likely to be the same three-cylinder 1.2-litre petrol found in the Micra, although a more fuel-efficient 1-litre is also being considered.

The upcoming Nissan I2 is expected to rival the Maruti Suzuki Alto, which is currently the number 1 subcompact car in the world. The i2 was developed by the American company Defiance Testing & Engineering, which was acquired by Ashok Leyland (AL) in 2007. It is worth noting that Ashok Leyland and Nissan formed a joint venture to develop small cars and now we know; this is I2.

We can expect AL to develop the I2 with major engineering work in place to reduce development costs. Since the I2 is aimed at Maruti Alto customers, expect this car to be priced around Rs. 2.5 lakh and could be launched in 2013.

Nissan also has a joint-stock company in Bazhaev, on the basis of which a budget car will be created. We still don't know if Nissan will include this vehicle in its product portfolio, commonly known as ultra-low cost vehicles or ULCs. However, even without the involvement of ULC, the Japanese automaker plans to hit the mass market earlier with the Micra, K2 and I2. Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai and Tata Motors, beware!
